About Athletic Therapy, Functional Movement, and Movement Sessions
What is Athletic Therapy?
Athletic therapists (AT) work in both the healthcare (clinician) and paramedical (emergency responders) divisions of care, specializing in musculoskeletal conditions. A certified therapist can provide comprehensive care from the initial injury to full return to activities of all types. In the clinical setting, an AT provides immediate assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries and illnesses, and can prevent future injuries through education and minimization of the risks for further injuries/illnesses.
What does a typical Athletic Therapy session look like?
Maitland will assess your injury through a thorough history and physical exam, including range of motion examination and special tests followed by treatment and rehabilitative exercises. Treatment can include massage techniques, mobilizations, ultrasound, electrical modalities, and more. The initial assessment appointment is 1 hour and follow-up appointments are 45 minutes.
What is functional movement therapy?
Functional movement therapy is performed with a certified athletic therapist (CAT(C)) and has two main aims. (1) to identify and rectify dysfunctions to help you hold adjustments better and correct subluxation patterns; and (2) to identify and rectify dysfunctions/areas of pain which affect your activities of daily living, or limit your recreational endeavors.
What does a typical movement session look like?
All movement sessions are 30 minutes, the first of which is an assessment in which the certified athletic therapist assesses the patient for 8 areas of dysfunction, through multiple joint specific examinations and special tests. After this, working with the patients goals and lifestyle, the follow-up movement sessions will involve exercises prescriptions, tracking and progressions to help the patient achieve their goals.
